Date night is a sacred occasion whether you’ve been together two weeks or 25 years. The number one way to celebrate date night is with a romantic dinner, of course. Good food, drink, and quality time with your partner — what’s not to like?
In Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, residents and travellers alike are blessed with an exciting dining scene, with each restaurant offering something different.
Having so many spectacular restaurants is a good problem to have, and we’ve made things easier for you by selecting our top 5 romantic restaurants in Newcastle.
Whether you’re looking for a classy, intimate setting to mark a special occasion or a sunny terrace to soak up stunning views, our list of date-friendly dining destinations has the restaurant for you.
3Sixty Champagne Lounge
Why you’ll love it: spectacular panoramic views from the city’s tallest building.
Nothing beats a meal with a good view; at 3Sixty, every seat in the house enjoys a breath-taking panoramic of Newcastle.
Located atop the tallest building in the city, you can sip signature cocktails and work your way through the restaurant’s small plates and sharing boards. From oysters and scallops to kofta and sushi, the small plates are ideal for trying a bit of everything!
Hadrian’s Tower, 27 Rutherford Street, Newcastle, NE4 5BJ (it’s the tallest building in Newcastle, so if you can’t find it, look up!)
Träkol
Why you’ll love it: an unassuming shipping container makes for a unique date spot.
You’d be forgiven for walking past Träkol if it wasn’t for the jam-packed terrace.
Träkol, located in a cluster of renovated shipping containers tucked under the famous Tyne Bridge, isn’t your typical date night location. But don’t let the humble exterior deceive you.
Träkol is an open-fire restaurant serving seriously good food. The concept here is primitive cooking, indoors, with everything from pig’s head (yes, really) to roasted shellfish on the menu.
There are two prime spots to bag a table: close to the open plan kitchen or on the terrace, which overlooks the Tyne River.
There’s only a limited number of tables, so book well in advance. This spot is a firm favourite amongst locals.
Hillgate Quays, Newcastle, Gateshead, NE8 2BH (if you get lost, head to the Tyne Bridge)
Blackfriars Restaurant
Why you’ll love it: a genuine 13th-century mediaeval banquet hall.
Blackfriars Restaurant occupies the UK’s oldest dining room. If that doesn’t impress your partner, we don’t know what will! It might be the unique, mediaeval setting that draws you to this restaurant, but it’s the exceptional food that’ll keep you coming back.
Serving high-end British cuisine with a focus on seasonal produce (often straight from local farms and markets), the food here is so good it earned the restaurant a coveted Taste of England Award.
Either dine in the historic building or enjoy an alfresco meal in the quaint Cloister Garden, a stunning courtyard surrounded by mediaeval buildings.
Blackfriars Restaurant & Banquet Hall, Friars Street, Newcastle, NE1 4XN
House of Tides
Why you’ll love it: an opulent Michelin-starred venue
House of Tides is a Michelin-starred restaurant without the over-the-top formal setting you’d expect.
The relaxed dining room fosters a welcoming atmosphere where you don’t have to worry about looking the part. Complete with a large open fireplace and views over River Tyne, you’ll soon feel at home.
The restaurant only serves a 9-course tasting menu, eliminating the troublesome task of choosing what to order!
The menu uses seasonal and sustainable produce, which changes with the seasons. House of Tides only opens its doors Wednesday – Saturday, which, as you would expect, leads to it being a very exclusive spot. Book in advance!
28-30 The Close, Newcastle, NE1 3RF
Vegano
Why you’ll love it: 100% vegan options
Although the restaurants above adequately cater for vegetarians and vegans, we thought it’s only right to include a 100% vegan option.
Vegano offers a wide variety of delicious food in a modern and cosy setting. Opt for a three-course Italian-inspired menu, or get your hands dirty with a vegan burger or kebab.
For a table at Vegano, plan accordingly. The restaurant is only open three nights per week (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday).
33a Blandford Square, Newcastle, NE1 4HZ
