Making sure that driving with Bolt is safe is a task we do not take lightly. Our goal is to offer a secure service for everyone. From this article, you can read about what we do to keep our drivers safe.
How we make driving with Bolt safe
Passenger’s profile info
When you answer an incoming request, you see the name of the passenger you’re about to drive. After reaching the pick-up point and letting them in, confirm that it’s a match.
Feedback matters
Most probably you’ve not only heard but know everything there is to know about driver rating. If not, you can read more about maintaining a good one from here. But did you know that you can rate your passengers as well? And not only can but should, because it’s one of the ways to make driving with Bolt safe for everyone.
Ratings are a two-way street. Passengers can rate you and you can rate them. If you have an unpleasant experience with a passenger, please report it by leaving them an adequate rating. Only this way can we make sure that disrespectful people get contacted and if necessary, blocked from the app.
Keeping an eye on you
All Bolt rides are tracked from start to finish. Thanks to this, we know where and when you are in case you need assistance. If necessary, we can also look at the record of your drives to solve any disputes that may arise.
In-app navigation
To let you drive with ease, Bolt driver app has a built-in navigation system, which takes off the worry of planning your route to the destination. By letting the app do the guidance, you can concentrate on driving safely.
If you prefer, you can switch the navigation to Waze, which also gives you information about ongoing traffic and possible stops along the way.
SOS button
Driving with Bolt should be safe for anyone at any given time. That includes extreme circumstances as well. To ensure your well-being in medical or security emergencies, we have included an SOS button to the Bolt driver app. In case of danger to you, your passenger or anyone else on the road, please do not hesitate to use it.
When you press the button, our safety partner Nairobi Rescue Team is immediately notified. You will be contacted for further details, so please, answer your phone as soon as possible. This way it is certain that the right kind of help will be on its way within minutes.
Be sure to use the SOS button in the following situations:
- Medical emergencies, like injuries from road accidents, having trouble breathing, and anyone who is unconscious or with bleeding that requires medical attention.
- Security emergencies, like life-threatening situations while driving, being stranded in an unsafe location with a broken vehicle, attempted vehicle hijack or any form of violence or attack.
Guide for using the SOS button:
- press and hold the button for 3 seconds;
- select the Yes button to confirm your emergency;
- depending on your emergency, security personnel or an ambulance will be dispatched to your location.
You should know that Bolt will also be notified of the incident and will handle the case as a matter of urgency.

Here’s what you can do
It’s not just us, though. Making sure that your daily driving with Bolt is safe goes two ways. Here are the things you can do to stay safe out there.
Take care of yourself
When was the last time you had a break?
We highly recommend taking breathers between rides, especially long ones. After being behind the wheel for some hours, take some time to rest – enjoy a cup of coffee and stretch your legs. You can time your breaks for low-demand hours. See your city’s demand schedule here.
If you feel tired, stop driving as it is dangerous for you and others on the road.
Make sure your car is in order
Car maintenance is much more than just washing your four-wheeled buddy. To keep your steel horse going strong, make sure it’s well oiled.
No texting and driving
Chatting regularly with our loved ones and friends has been made easy thanks to the rise of smartphone usage. Keeping ourselves updated is great, but it’s not something you should do while being in traffic. Texting and driving do not go hand-in-hand, no matter how good a driver you are.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) this year could be the worst for road users across the country as accidents are likely to hit an all-time high, and lot of reported accidents caused by the use of mobile phones while driving. Makes you think, doesn’t it?
Keep your eyes on the road and don’t distract yourself with your smartphone. Make sure you get yourself and your passengers home safely. Here are some handy guides for turning off the notifications on an iPhone and on an Android.
Follow the traffic rules
Red lights, traffic signs and speed limits make our cities safer and their traffic smoother. Even if you feel confident behind the wheel, don’t let yourself become overconfident. Follow the rules. It’s the easiest thing you can do to avoid accidents.
