Vehicle Safety First: Getting a Certificate of Fitness (COF)
A Certificate of Fitness (COF) is a regular inspection to ensure that your vehicle meets the safety standards required for commercial passenger services.
You can do this at a NZTA Agent, like VTNZ, AA or VINZ. Please apply using Bolt’s TSL number (0338549)

If your vehicle passes, the COF is issued immediately.

What are the requirements?
Ensure your vehicle meets all safety and compliance standards before inspection.

Hatchbacks & Station Wagons might be required to secure items in your boot. A cargo net is an affordable option and can be found at stores like SuperCheap Auto and Repco
You may need to fill out a "Change of Vehicle Use" form and buy a child lock safety sticker when getting your COF.

What to Check If Using a Rental Car:
If you're using a rental car for ride-hailing, be aware that while these vehicles have a Certificate of Fitness (CoF), they may not have a Certificate of Loading (CoL) - which is needed for ride-hailing. Make sure your vehicle meets all the requirements before hitting the road.
Carrying Passengers Within Limits
All drivers must ensure they do not carry more passengers or weight than what’s allowed under the vehicle’s Certificate of Loading (CoL). This applies to both personal and rental vehicles. As the licensed operator, it’s your responsibility to follow these limits — overloading can result in fines and breaches of your operating obligations.
