The hottest social media star on the block is TikTok, and while it may have initially gotten popular due to its fun dance trends and creative special effects, the real reason this social video site has gotten popular is because of all the TikTok food trends!
TikTok Pasta: the viral trend that started it all
Legend has it that when this mega-viral dish first made its debut in Finland, the entire country ran out of feta cheese because so many people were trying to make this dish at home. And since then, this Baked Feta Pasta dish has travelled worldwide and had its praises sung by too many celebrities and influencers to count!
So, how can you get in on this deliciousness?
Itâs super simple, but first, youâre going to want to lug out a skillet or baking dish and preheat your oven to 200°C. After thatâs done:
- Combine a big bunch of juicy cherry tomatoes with shallots, garlic, and olive oil;
- Toss and season with salt and chilli flakes and pop the entire mixture into the dish;
- Next, place the star of the show â your block of feta cheese â in the center of the dish, and drizzle a little more olive oil on top;
- Scatter a bit of thyme and bake for 40-45 minutes until the tomatoes are bursting and the feta is golden toasty brown on top.
While the feta and tomatoes are baking, cook some pasta, drain, and then dump it all into the baking dish once the cheese is done. Stir until completely combined into a delicious, gooey, tomatoey, fetalicious mess.
Garnish with basil and lemon zest and then dig in so you can taste for yourself what all the fuss is about!
TikTok Cake: mini pancake cereal
The latest food trend thatâs all the rage on TikTok is mini pancake cereal.
If you havenât heard of it yet, donât overthink it. Itâs just miniature versions of traditional breakfast pancakes. Crispy on the outside, super fluffy on the inside, and extra teeny tiny.
If you want the full TikTok experience, create a big batch of little pancakes, pop them in a bowl, add a tab of butter, drizzle with maple syrup, and enjoy! But before you dig in, donât forget to get a picture for the âgram!
TikTok Bread: More specifically, cloud bread pizza
Cloud bread is TikTokâs dreamiest, fluffiest guilt-free food trend. Itâs an airy, pastel-coloured bread that is made with egg whites, sugar, cornstarch, and food colouring and thus, low-carb and low-calorie unlike, you know, real bread.
If youâre a regular on TikTok, you must have seen people making, then squishing the biggest, fluffiest, most impossibly gigantic puffs of bread youâve ever seen in your life.
The great news is cloud bread is amazingly easy to make:
- Whip egg whites in a clean, grease-free bowl until theyâre frothy;
- Stir in some sugar, a little at a time, until the sugar dissolves and the egg whites begin to foam up;
- Now itâs time for the cornstarch â sift it in to avoid lumps;
- Continue to whip the mixture on high until the egg whites are a glossy thick meringue. Youâll know theyâre done when you lift the beater out of the bowl and your concoction still holds a âpeakâ â in other words, stays in the shape of a little mountain â and looks smooth and creamy with a consistency like shaving cream. But be careful not to over whip!
Shape your cloud with a rubber spatula on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at a low oven temperature until golden.
The latest TikTok craze is to take a piece of cloud bread and spread some pizza sauce, a sprinkle of shredded mozzarella, and then bake at low heat until warm and melted for a low-carb slice of cloud bread pizza heaven. Yum!
TikTok Wrap: The viral tortilla trend
This particular TikTok trend is actually a super versatile, easy, and delicious meal option that you can eat at any time of the day.
And itâs super simple to make:
- Take a whole-wheat or white flour tortilla and slice it from one edge to the centre so you essentially make the circle âPac-manâ shaped;
- Add toppings to the 4 different âquadrantsâ of the tortilla â a common theme is to choose veggies, cooked burger meat, guacamole, and shredded cheese, but feel free to get creative with your ingredients (and of course turn to TikTok for inspiration!);
- Next, fold each quadrant up and over to form a triangle-shaped wrap;
- Once itâs neatly assembled, grill it on a skillet or panini press so itâs lightly toasted on one side.
Slice and enjoy!
