Sustainability at Bolt

Bolt's mission to create cities for people, not cars, is interconnected with our commitment to sustainability. To achieve this, we take a holistic approach that combines the following core pillars:
Environmental

The primary goal is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to carbon net-zero by 2040. To reduce our carbon footprint, we’re measuring our GHG emissions globally and across all products to understand where we can make the most impact.

Social impact

We endorse programmes promoting economic empowerment for our partners and prioritise safety and well-being for customers, employees, and partners worldwide.

Risk management and governance

We're ensuring the long-term success of our sustainability initiatives through robust oversight and management of potential risks.

Working towards net-zero shared mobility

Shared transport can transform our cities by lowering emissions, reducing congestion, and the demand for parking spaces.

Our long-term environmental goal is to offer 100% carbon net-zero shared mobility solutions by 2040.

Bolt’s Sustainability Strategy and our environmental targets

In 2023, we committed to our carbon net-zero goal for 2040, which is now at the centre of Bolt’s Sustainability Strategy. Here are some of the most important targets from the strategy:
Bolt’s Sustainability Strategy and our environmental targets
  1. Net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
  2. 100% renewable electricity in Bolt-controlled offices, warehouses, charging docks and Bolt Market premises by 2025.
  3. 90% of our waste finds a new use through circular economy solutions by 2030.

Science Based Targets initiative

Science Based Targets initiative

Bolt’s net-zero and near-term targets are validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Bolt joined the SBTi to help ensure accountability and rigour in our push to become a zero-emission platform. SBTi is a global corporate climate action organisation that validates greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets for companies and financial institutions, ensuring they align with climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Expanding our zero emission fleet

We focus on partnerships that facilitate the expansion of zero emission (i.e. fully electric) vehicles on our ride-hailing, car sharing, and delivery platforms.

All of Bolt’s electric scooters and e-bikes are zero emission vehicles with no tailpipe emissions.

We offset the emissions created during the manufacturing, operating, maintenance, and disposal of these vehicles via various funding projects, making them certified CarbonNeutral®.

Baltics

We partnered with Eleport, a leading EV charging network developer in the Baltics and Poland, to install 750 electric vehicle charging points and launch a driver EV charging incentive programme.

Additionally, our collaboration with Swedbank and Luminor is helping expand Bolt Drive’s hybrid and electric car rental fleets.

Powered by renewable electricity and the circular economy

From the beginning of 2024, our offices, warehouses and charging docks have been using 100% renewable electricity.*

By the end of 2025 our Market stores will also use renewable electricity, meaning that all Bolt-controlled sites will be 100% powered by renewable electricity from the end of 2025.

We plan to direct at least 90% of the waste we produce back to the circular economy by 2030.

*Purchasing renewable electricity certificates is required where direct renewable electricity supply contracts are not possible.

Focusing on sustainable product design

~80% of our scooters are designed in-house, which gives us better control over materials, maintenance and utilisation.

According to the Life Cycle Assessment* (LCA), our latest model Bolt-6 e-scooter has:
  • Average distance per lifetime of 15,000km;
  • 15% lower per km greenhouse gas emission rate (when compared to our previous model);
  • Recyclability rate** of 89.52%;
  • Modular design to simplify repair processes and reduce waste.
This means less time being repaired and charged, more shared rides per scooter, and ultimately, less emissions during the scooter life cycle.
*Conducted by our partners at Ladera
** Using the calculation methodology in ISO standard 22628

Encouraging sustainable modal shift

Our pilot programs in 10 European cities have proven that, when encouraged, riders will opt for scooters or e-bikes instead of cars if their planned trip is under 3 km.

Emission offsetting and climate action

Bolt currently holds CarbonNeutral® certification by Climate Impact Partners for Micromobility (i.e. our e-scooters and e-bikes).

We fund projects, verified by Climate Impact Partners, to offset emissions that we’re currently unable to reduce or eliminate. We’ve previously funded projects related to wind and energy, carbon removal, forest creation, improved water infrastructure, mangrove restoration, and efficient cooking stoves.

One of Bolt’s current climate action partners, Milkywire, manages a portfolio of projects which focus on carbon removal, decarbonisation and nature protection and restoration.

Bolt also funds additional climate action projects to help combat climate change. In 2022, we partnered with Seedballs Kenya to spread 25 tonnes of indigenous seeds (Seedbolts) — equivalent to planting over 11 million tree seeds. Our previous projects include reforestation projects with OneTreePlanted in Portugal and Romania.
Bolt’s global environmental management system is certified to the ISO 14001:2015 standard.
Sustainability in our value chain

Sustainability in our value chain

All of our suppliers must adhere to Bolt’s Supplier Code of Conduct. This consists of 6 core areas:
Beyond this, we do all we can to ensure that our suppliers aim to create a positive and sustainable impact on people’s lives and the environment.
  1. human rights;
  2. labour practices;
  3. health and safety;
  4. quality;
  5. the environment;
  6. the right to audit.

ESG Governance

As sustainability is a priority for Bolt, our compliance and governance processes play a crucial role in ensuring that our operations meet the continually evolving needs of our stakeholders. In the world of sustainability, what was considered acceptable in the past does not remain so for long as society continually raises the bar.
