Bolt collects commission in all markets where we operate. In Kenya, we charge a commission rate of 18% on every trip price.
Important information about commission
Commission applies to both cash and card trips.
Commission does not apply to tips, bonuses, toll fees, cancellation fees, or booking fees.
Commission will be calculated automatically and reflect directly in your app.
Failure to pay commission will results in your cash trip option being temporarily suspended due to debt. You can ONLY take card trips meanwhile.

VAT on Commission

Important FAQs about VAT charged on Commission
This is in line with the digital service tax proposed as per NTSA regulations. The provisions of VAT (Electronic, Internet and Digital Market Place Supply) Regulations, 2023 obligate Bolt to collect and remit 16% VAT chargeable on Bolt’s 18% Commission
Bolt commission is capped at 18%. This 18% will not include the VAT based on NTSA regulations. The charge will be a 16% rate on the Commission fee for each trip.
Effective 1st April, 2025
The 2023 VAT regulations place obligations on digital marketplace suppliers, but individual drivers still have income tax responsibilities. It is highly advisable for drivers to seek guidance from the KRA or a qualified tax professional to ensure they are fully compliant with Kenyan tax laws.
