Breaking stereotypes: Meet a resilient female driver changing the narrative

Defying expectations in the ride-hailing industry

Traditional gender roles often dictate career choices, but some individuals challenge the status quo. One such trailblazer is Eda Aitalegbe, a former media professional who spent 14 years at Africa Independent Television (AIT) before seeking greater financial freedom and flexibility. Her journey into the ride-hailing industry came with its challenges, but her perseverance has made her a role model for many.

A rocky start to a new beginning

Eda considered joining Bolt in 2015 but faced strong opposition from her family, who believed making money driving was not suitable for a woman. Without guarantors to secure a brand-new vehicle, she had to put her dreams on hold. Undeterred, she waited until she had her own car and officially joined Bolt, determined to succeed on her own terms.

4 years of driving, countless stories to tell

Since taking the bold step into making money driving 4 years ago, Eda has built a wealth of experiences. She describes her journey as “awesome,” highlighting the many connections she has made with passengers along the way.

One standout moment was when a male passenger, impressed by her resilience, rewarded her far beyond the standard fare — ₦10,000 instead of ₦1,600. Such encounters reinforce the respect she has earned in the industry.

Financial independence and community building

Driving with Bolt has given Eda more than just earnings — it has provided her with financial stability and independence. “I never go broke,” she proudly states, as her daily earnings ensure she always has financial security.

Beyond her own success, Eda has fostered a sense of community among fellow female drivers. She and 3 others formed a savings group, known in Yoruba culture as “Ajo.” Each member contributes ₦10,000 daily, pooling together ₦1.2 million over 4 months. This initiative helped Eda purchase her second car, showcasing the power of financial cooperation.

Breaking stereotypes one ride at a time

Despite her success, Eda continues to face gender biases. Many still believe driving is a male-dominated profession, but with 37 years of driving experience, she proves otherwise. Her story inspires women who may feel restricted by societal expectations.

Through determination and a fearless attitude, Eda has built a sustainable career while paving the way for more women to consider ride-hailing a viable profession. As she continues to navigate the roads of Lagos, she does so with pride, breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation of female drivers.

Her journey is a testament to resilience, financial independence, and the impact of defying norms. In a world that often limits women, Eda is steering her way to success — one ride at a time.
