After months inside our homes, connected to devices all day, it can be hard to disconnect. Recent studies have shown that UK adults spend a daily average of four hours and two minutes online, representing more than a quarter of their waking day.
How to find the perfect balance
Experts recommend getting no more than one or two hours of screen time per day. With the arrival of good weather and the ease of restrictions, there are more than enough reasons to leave the house and enjoy the offline world.
It’s time to challenge yourself to turn your phone off, have face-to-face conversations, and spend some quality time in the real world.
Here are five tips to reduce your daily screen time:
1. Schedule screen-free hours
Keep your phone (or other devices) away from yourself for a couple of hours. Instead, read a book, have a walk, cook, work out, or meet up with a friend. The options are endless, but just remember to keep your phone elsewhere during that time.
2. Check your pickups
Have you ever looked at your phone for no particular reason? Well, you’re not the only one. Research shows that we pick up our phones on average 58 times a day. You can usually check your pickups in your phone’s settings. It’s a pretty high number, right? Well, the first step to lower this number is simply to be more aware of it. You’re on the right track, though — a little more extra effort and you’ll bring that number down for good.
3. Turn off your notifications
Turning off your notifications will reduce the temptation to look at your phone during the day.
4. Schedule a fixed time to check social media, texts, and emails
To get more control over your screen time, allocate a fixed slot in the day to check up on your social media, texts, and emails. Once you’re done, put your phone away — no peeking!
5. Put your phone away when you’re with family and friends
It’s as simple as that. Whether you’re having a drink with a friend or a meal with your family, the mobile is so often left on the table, within reach. This makes it tempting to look. Instead, focus on the real people around you — you won’t regret it!
