Bolt launches the first shared e-scooter scheme in Ireland

15 Aug 2024

Today, Wexford residents and visitors have one more way to move around town.

Wexford joins more than 250 cities worldwide where Bolt scooters are available. We designed them to help you get from A to B safely and quickly.

Accessible transport tailored to Wexford

Last year, we introduced shared e-bikes to Wexford and have been pleased to see thousands of unique users taking trips each month.

After the Department of Transport introduced new regulations for e-scooters earlier this year, the timing was perfect to introduce a scooter scheme in Wexford town—Ireland’s first location to have such a scheme and the only place in Ireland where you can hire e-scooters or e-bikes in one app and use them on public roads.

Introducing new mobility options can help towns and cities like Wexford become less reliant on private cars, and e-scooters are a crucial piece of the mobility puzzle.

With Bolt’s expertise in providing last-kilometre solutions to hundreds of cities globally — we’re ready to tailor our e-scooter scheme to Wexford’s needs, with a safe, intuitive, and fun way to travel.

Safety first, second, and third

Since e-scooters are relatively new in Ireland, there are many questions and fair considerations regarding safety.

Our e-scooters are packed with safety features for passengers and the public alike. When using a Bolt scooter, you can rely on the following safety measures:

  • Max speed limits are set to 20 kilometres an hour, even when travelling downhill
    • Beginner mode, where max speed limits are capped at 15  kilometres an hour while you develop confidence.
  • We proactively reduce the scooter speed for reckless skidders and inform them about it.
  • Tandem riding detection, should more than one person use an e-scooter at the same time. Repeated detection of tandem riding could result in loss of access to our services.
  • Like e-bikes, e-scooters can only be parked in certain locations to keep shared spaces accessible for everyone.
  • All users must take a quick test between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. to test their reaction speeds before hiring an e-bike or e-scooter. If users fail the test, they cannot hire the vehicle.

We also plan on working with Wexford on special e-scooter safety sessions to help spread the word about this new mode of transport.

Mobility perceptions across Ireland

We’ve recently surveyed 500 members of the general Irish public to learn how micromobility can better serve communities and reduce the use of privately owned cars. According to our findings, respondents had the following to say:

  • 62% of interviewed said e-scooters will help them connect to public transport.
  • 59% say introducing e-scooters would make them use their car less.
  • 57% mentioned that they’d consider using e-scooters to travel to local businesses more frequently.

Our research and experience working with Wexford County Council paints an exciting picture of how local communities can benefit when they embrace shared micromobility.

Let’s move, Wexford
