Application process for a Driving License

To drive on a public road in Kenya, ferrying passengers for a living, you require a regular driver's license. 

In Kenya, there is driver's licenses with two validity periods: 12 months or 3 years. You can apply through the e-citizen platform with the NTSA portal.

You must be at least 18 years of age to get licensed to drive a motor vehicle, and at least 16 years for motorcycles.

What are the requirements?

Proof of competency from a driving school.

Cost: 1 year renewal (KES 1050) or 3 years smart DL (KES 3050)

PS. New drivers have to pay for a smart DL.

Important information about applying for a Driving License in Kenya

  • How long does it take to acquire a driver's license?
    Online renewal of a driver's license is immediate once you pay.
  • What is the penalty for driving without a licence?
    This is a minimum requirement for you to drive with Bolt. New drivers must also acquire a driver's license in order to register to become a Bolt Driver. From a legal standpoint, you could face a fine of up to KES 20,000 or imprisonment for a term of up to 3 months for the first conviction, and a fine of up to KES 30,000 or imprisonment for a term of up to 6 months or both for subsequent convictions.
  • What do I need to do when my DL is lost, defaced or mutilated?
    When this happens, you will have to apply for a new smart licence on the NTSA TIMS Portal as follows: 1. Log into TIMS NTSA Portal 2. Select driving licence 3. Select "Apply for smart driving licence" 4. Fill in the required details 5. Pay the required fee and visit the NTSA Office with your invoice and passport photo. 6. Pick your driving licence at the prescribed time.
