Bolt’s internship programme returns to help women develop their careers

As of 2022, women hold only 26.7% of technology jobs. And compared to entry-level roles, top-management positions have an even lower representation of women. We want to drive change and support strong, ambitious women entering the tech industry.

To help, we’re excited to announce the return of our internship programme, The Bolt Outternship, designed to help women kick-start their careers and create a more equal and diverse tech future in Nigeria.

To give you a better overview of the Bolt Outternship, we asked last year’s participants to share their thoughts, worries, highlights, and words of encouragement for applicants. If, after reading the article, you feel inspired to apply, you’ll find an application link at the end of the article.

Now let’s hear from our previous interns.

Kenechi Jacob

As a final-year Industrial Relations and Personnel Management student, Kenechi didn’t have any experience in the tech space. Still, she was curious to learn about the world of tech.

Kenechi interned in the Bolt Food Operations team, helping onboard new restaurants to the platform and ensuring restaurants had no issues accepting customer orders. “While I interned at Bolt, I was privileged to learn and work alongside amazing and hardworking women who taught me so much,” says Kenechi.

Currently, Kenechi works in another tech company and is grateful for the knowledge she gained at Bolt.

“Do what you love and leave room for exploration and adventure. No knowledge is ever wasted!” she says.

Elizabeth Chukwu

Elizabeth’s background is in accounting and finance, and when she applied, she had no previous experience in the tech industry. She interned in the Operations department, specialising in fraud.

“During my internship, I saw how important data is. It’s not a good approach to work based on assumptions if you want to build a sustainable and lasting product or service,” says Elizabeth.

Elizabeth is a university student, and she shared that, every day, she can apply the knowledge she gained during the internship — especially in problem-solving.

“Not to sound like a Nike ambassador, but just do it! Don’t underestimate yourself — you’ll be surprised what you’re capable of when you go for what you want!” she says.

Isabelle Marinze

Isabelle was an intern in the Marketing department and joined with no previous experience in the tech industry.

“I decided to apply for the internship because a tech career is full of possibilities. Technology is fast-moving, endlessly innovative, and financially rewarding. There’s more opportunity and more chance to apply creativity, technical excellence, and multiple different skill sets,” says Isabelle.

Isabelle’s biggest learnings were conducting research, writing copy, and designing social media posts. She also used every opportunity to learn from her mentors.

“I’m studying for my bachelor’s degree at university and doing freelance marketing jobs. The internship showed me how to balance those two worlds and gave me the skills to land a full-time job,” Isabelle says.

If you’re considering applying for Bolt’s internship, Isabelle encourages you to go for it — there’s no limit to what you can do if you put your mind to it.

How to apply

The application period starts on May 5 and lasts until June 9. There will be four stages in the recruitment process:

  1. You begin by submitting a form where you’ll have to answer a questionnaire, select your area of interest and submit your CV;
  2. Selected applicants must submit a video of themselves responding to our case study in less than 2 minutes;
  3. We’ll conduct interviews with selected applicants;
  4. We’ll send offers to 4 successful candidates.

This year, the Bolt Outternship runs from July until September. It’s paid, and we don’t expect you to have a strong background in of our offer areas — we all start somewhere.
