Bolt electric vehicle charging hub in Stockholm

As Stockholm prepares to introduce fossil-fuel-free zones, we’ve partnered with JBCharge to launch our first electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in the city’s heart.

Equipped with ultra-fast chargers that can add up to 150 kilometres range in just 10 minutes, the hub improves access to ultra-fast charging options in dense city centres, helping drivers save valuable time.

Bolt is committed to doing our part in advancing low-emission transport by making electric vehicle charging for ride-hailing drivers more seamless, accessible and affordable.

Maximising driver earnings and efficiency

Currently, EV drivers in Stockholm often spend up to 30 minutes each day searching for and driving to a charger, in addition to the actual charging time.

Our new charging hub addresses this challenge head-on. Located centrally and equipped with four ultra-fast 150KW chargers, it allows drivers to charge their vehicles quickly — adding up to 150 km range in just 10 minutes.

Conveniently open 24/7 and exclusive to drivers on the Bolt platform, the hub can accommodate up to 200 electric vehicles around the clock. Bolt driver partners can also benefit from discounted fast-charging prices.

Using the Monta app, drivers can virtually queue for their next charging session while still on the road, ultimately maximising their active earning hours and reclaiming valuable time.

Breaking down the barriers to wider EV adoption

Bolt’s early 2024 driver survey revealed that the transition to EVs hinges on overcoming significant barriers — especially those concerning charging infrastructure. 72% of drivers identified the cost and availability of charging as the key barrier to adopting electric vehicles.

Our recent survey of more than 7200 driver partners across 7 markets (including Sweden) revealed that 90% of EV drivers charge at least once a day. Nearly 80% of drivers highlighted that charging affects their active hours, indicating the pressing need for more accessible charging solutions.

Although, according to the recent ACEA report, Sweden ranks 5th in charging points per 1,000 inhabitants, there’s still only 1 public charging point per 15 electric vehicles in Stockholm. And 50% of drivers say they don’t have a private parking space or garage to install a charger.

It’s concerning that 80% of drivers are hesitant to adopt EVs in the coming years, with 38% citing charging and range anxiety as the main barriers to switching.

Despite these challenges, there’s good news!

Almost 60% of Bolt driver partners who have switched to electric vehicles report increased earnings due to lower operation costs.

This highlights the need for a collaborative effort to ensure drivers feel supported during this transition.

A future-focused approach

As the number of EVs continues to grow — over 47,500 new registrations in Stockholm in 2023 alone — it’s essential that we maintain an upward trend in charging point availability.

Although Stockholm has performed impressively, the number of charging points still needs to grow by 50% to meet the EU’s goal of having 1 charging point for every 10 electric vehicles.

The path to low-emission mobility remains challenging, and it’s crucial not making infrastructure a bottleneck.

Bolt is dedicated to playing its part in making the switch as smooth and beneficial as possible for drivers on our platform. If the pilot of our charging hub proves successful, we are ready to expand this initiative to other areas in Stockholm and beyond.

Charging ahead: collaborating for more low-emission transport

With our new EV charging hub, we’re excited to empower drivers, support the city’s sustainability goals, and contribute to a cleaner, greener future.

Access to charging infrastructure is pivotal for the broader adoption of electric vehicles, and we’re committed to working with all parties to ensure that we collectively move towards low-emission mobility.

Stay tuned for more updates on our journey as we pave the way for a more sustainable and electrified future in Stockholm!
