Bolt launches the Little Big Think Tank to channel the power of children’s creativity
Mar 12, 2024
We’re on a mission to make cities for people. But for that, we need imagination. So, we asked the world’s top imagination experts to join us. The youngest is 5. The oldest is 13. And they call themselves the Little Big Think Tank.
The experts
We worked with 37 kids from around the world and Rotterdam-based urban expert Lior Steinberg to launch the Little Big Think Tank — the world’s first think tank that brings together kids and adults to imagine the future of cities, mobility, and the environment.
Our experts showed us what the future can hold. Lior suggested how to turn their ideas into reality. And insights from the ‘Shared Mobility’s Global Impact’ study demonstrated how shared mobility fits into the picture.
“My dream street has lots of kids running around and playing, and they donʼt have to be scared to do it because there are no cars on our street. Mummy and Daddy go to workon unicorns, and I bike to the kindergarten.” says Emilia, a 5-year-old imagination expert from France.
The vision
Armed with the knowledge that nearly 60% of Europeans think their cities would be better with fewer cars, the Little Big Think Tank set out to inspire adults with tools available via littlebigthinktank.com
We gave the popular city playmat a people-friendly upgrade. Unlike its predecessor, it features pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, urban gardens, public transport, and shared mobility hubs to create a greener, cleaner, and safer urban environment.
The playmat was gifted to the openLAB Urban Mobility of the TUM School of Engineering and Design. But its design is open source and available to toy and furniture producers worldwide.
We combined drawings of childrens’ urban visions with expert commentary from Lior Steinberg into a coffee table book — and sprinkled it with data from the ‘Shared Mobility’s Global Impact’ study by Oliver Wyman.
Over 400 copies have been shipped to city authorities worldwide, and the free ebook is available via littlebigthinktank.com or here.
We hosted the world’s first imagination summit and documented it across a series of 6 videos.
The Little Big Events
We brought some of our experts’ dreams to life.
Emilia’s (age 6) drawing was turned into a film animation and premiered in an Estonian cinema for her and her friends.
Dakota’s (age 7) design became a real-life unicorn scooter, now available as part of our fleet in Lisbon.
Patrick (age 7) interviewed Lior to learn about teleportation and zombie protection.
The promotional campaign will run in 20 markets in Europe and Africa across paid digital, organic social, and Bolt’s owned channels.
The data
Imagination can show us better cities — but shared mobility can get us there faster. Mobility analysts have stated that by 2030, shared mobility will double its share of urban trips. It’ll provide 16 million people with earning opportunities and offer significant cost savings to the average car owner. But most importantly, it could help cities cut car usage and CO2 emissions by up to 20% (Oliver Wyman).
The impact of shared mobility is already noticeable. People in Europe are driving their cars less, becoming open to using shared mobility services, and eventually, also to the idea of completely forgoing private cars.
