John: from the East Midlands (UK) to Tallinn

Meet John

When John first boarded a plane to Tallinn, he thought it might be for a couple of years. Three years later, he’s still here, thriving in a place he proudly calls home.

From a “temporary” move to home

Originally from the East Midlands in the UK, John joined Bolt in 2021 as Regional Marketing Manager for Western Europe. At the time, he was based in the UK but working closely with colleagues in Tallinn.

“When the opportunity to relocate came up, it felt like a natural next step,” he says. “I’d always been curious about Estonia, and moving meant I could be closer to the people I was working with every day.”

What started as a temporary move soon became something more. “It wasn’t one big moment, but lots of smaller ones,” John says. “Walking home in the winter snow. Staying out late on long summer nights. Jumping into the sea after the sauna. Realising I could think in Estonian without translating in my head. That’s when I knew this wasn’t just a chapter — it was becoming home.”

Career growth at HQ

Relocation didn’t just reshape John’s personal life — it opened up new horizons for his career. After starting with a regional focus, his role quickly expanded into leading Bolt’s Local Marketing teams across more than 50 markets, from Asunción to Auckland.

“The scope has grown massively,” he reflects. “It’s been a steep learning curve, but incredibly rewarding. Being at HQ every day has deepened my understanding of the company and strengthened relationships across the business.”

Pace and culture: Tallinn vs London

People sometimes assume that working in Tallinn must be more relaxed than in a global hub like London. John’s experience has been the opposite.

“Having worked in London for 8 years, I’d say the level of pace and rigour at Bolt is absolutely equivalent to any demanding role in a major city. It’s not about location, it’s about the organisation. Bolt strives for excellence in the same way any global market leader does.

One of my first weeks here, I saw decisions that I thought would take weeks elsewhere get made in an afternoon — and the expectation was that we’d execute straight away.

Decisions happen quickly, and you’re trusted to own your work from day one. It teaches you to focus on what matters most and adapt fast.”

Impact beyond growth campaigns

That pace is matched by the scale of impact. For John, some of the most meaningful projects have been about supporting Bolt’s driver community — the people who make the platform possible.

“It’s not just about campaigns that bring in new riders,” he explains. “It’s also about initiatives that support drivers in real ways. That can mean anything from product features that help drivers stay safe while earning, to organising community events like sports tournaments and family fun days.

When you see thousands of drivers and their families come together, or you know that a new safety feature is directly protecting people, you realise just how many lives Bolt touches around the world. That scale is humbling, and it’s a constant reminder of why the work matters.”

Finding belonging in Estonia

Estonia has also played a key role in John’s journey. What first struck him as “quiet” has revealed itself as vibrant, full of humour, traditions, and a deep sense of community. Evening walks through Tallinn’s Old Town, winter saunas, and weekends running along the seafront have become his everyday rhythm.

“The pace of life here really suits me,” he says. “It’s grounded, unhurried, and encourages you to spend time outdoors. I feel healthier here, both physically and mentally.”

John’s commitment to integrating goes beyond everyday routines. He’s preparing for his A2 language exam, joined the Estonian Defence League as a supporting member, and even started a small business with a local friend. Relocation also shaped his personal life in a big way: he met his partner here in Estonia, and they’re soon to be married.

Advice for others considering the move

“Estonia might seem small, but it’s full of opportunities for career growth, connection, and quality of life. And the language isn’t as impossible as it’s made out to be. Start learning from day one — locals really appreciate the effort.”

So what has kept him here, year after year? “A mix of belonging, purpose, and the sense that I’m building something real and meaningful, both personally and professionally.”

Lucas: from São Paulo to Tallinn

Meet Lucas

Lucas grew up in São Paulo, one of the biggest cities on the planet. He’s 31, loves football (São Paulo FC!), martial arts, and being around people.

He joined Bolt in January 2022 as a Product Manager, grew into Senior Product Manager, and — as of August 2025 — leads Bolt’s Identity team (think verification, authentication, privacy, all the sensitive stuff that makes your account your account). Why move, and why Bolt?

Post‑pandemic, Lucas was ready to live abroad and learn in an international environment. He spoke with companies across Europe and the Middle East, but Bolt clicked: a mission he believed in, mobility at a global scale, and a company still growing fast enough for individuals to make a visible dent.

Estonia itself had been on his radar since a 2015 trip to Finland: the digital society, the ‘how does a small place build such big things?’ energy, and the track record of startups with global reach. When the Bolt offer landed, he didn’t overthink it.

The relocation sprint

The move happened quickly. Bolt’s team arranged flights, housing for the first month, and visa support. That freed Lucas to focus on settling in, finding a longer‑term apartment, and meeting his team. “Everything moved quickly,” he explains. “From the moment I signed, I felt supported and could just focus on starting my new life. The process was simple, and Estonia’s bureaucracy was straightforward.”

December in Tallinn: shock… and delight

Arriving in December was a shock: snow, darkness, and cold after a Brazilian summer. But it was also magical.

The Christmas lights, the clean and walkable streets, the slower pace — he fell in love almost immediately. The biggest cultural differences were how quiet and reserved people seemed, and how active they were in sports. “It was love at first sight,” Lucas remembers. “I didn’t expect to adapt so quickly, but I felt at home almost immediately.”

Life upgrade: time, health, and community

Shorter commutes and a saner pace created space for better habits. Lucas found community through Bolt new-joiners, company social events, and weekly football. Plus, a relocation programme that helped his partner build her own routine and career. “My quality of life improved so much,” he says. “Suddenly I had time for sports, friends, and myself.”

In Brazil, Lucas’s work was mostly for one market. At Bolt HQ, he learned to build for many countries at once.

He started on driver quality, moved into safety (which took him to South Africa, Paraguay, Portugal, Germany, the UK, and Azerbaijan), then regulatory and compliance in Rides, and now leads the Global Identity team. That range of experience would have been hard to get anywhere else.

“From HQ, you can’t stay in one‑market mode. You learn to build scalable products. And because you’re working with teammates from everywhere, bringing different cultures and perspectives, you learn faster and build better products.”

At Bolt, product managers don’t just manage backlogs — they own outcomes. With leadership close by and decisions moving quickly, Lucas’s team now handles identity for all Bolt verticals and markets, powering millions of logins, chats, calls, and verifications every month.

“From the very beginning, you’re trusted with big responsibilities,” he says. “In my first months, I was already presenting directly to the rides leadership team — including the CEO — mapping out the future of Safety at Bolt. That showed me what ownership really means here: how accessible leadership is, and how much responsibility you’re given early on to make an impact.”

Looking back and ahead

Nearly four years in, Lucas calls Estonia home.

He’s bought an apartment, applied for a new residence permit, and is learning the language. The move gave him stronger relationships, better habits, and a faster‑growing career. “I love Brazil, but Estonia is home now. Today and, hopefully, for a long time.”

Rory: from Cairns (AU) to Tallinn

Meet Rory

Rory is 42, married, and the proud dad of a five-year-old. By day, he’s a programmer helping Bolt expand Rides to new markets. By night (or sometimes coffee-fuelled weekends), he paints tabletop figurines — often showing them off in Bolt’s #gaming-hub Slack channel.

Before Estonia, Rory lived in Cairns, a tourist town in Far North Queensland. Think beaches, rainforest, and endless summer. “To me, Estonia is very exotic, because it’s not always hot,” he laughs.

From courts to tech customer support

Rory’s Australian career looked very different. He worked as an officer in the Family Court of Australia, handling paperwork, divorces, and even the occasional “All rise for the Honourable Justice.”

Before that, he worked in the Magistrate’s Court — sometimes acting as a marriage celebrant. “On one occasion, I did the paperwork and assisted on the divorce of a couple I’d married four years earlier,” he recalls. He admits there’s little overlap with programming today, except that both require being good at talking to people.

He first moved to Estonia for personal reasons in 2015.

A friend had married an Estonian, and through them, Rory met his future wife. At first, he didn’t imagine building his career here —“I was more focused on building a life instead.” His first job came almost by chance: he applied at Transferwise (now Wise) after hearing they wanted English speakers with customer service skills. “I didn’t even know what they did when I had my first interview,” Rory admits, “but they hired me anyway.”

Settling in

The first weeks were memorable: snow into March, and no winter clothes. “We had to go and buy me a jacket,” he says, laughing. But the excitement of discovering a new city carried him through. He didn’t apply for jobs at first, spending six months focusing on life with his partner before finding work. “Ultimately, a job was just something I sought out to pay the bills, not the reason for moving here.”

The cultural adjustment wasn’t huge — “people are people, they just do things a bit differently.” Still, some moments stood out: pigs’ ears and chicken crops on menus, or ordering nachos in a bar and getting only plain chips. He jokes that Estonia also cut his Vegemite consumption down to “emergency ration levels.”

Life in Tallinn

Rory describes Tallinn as “big enough that there’s always something new, but small enough to feel at home.” Public transport impressed him compared to Cairns, and he noticed the city’s high energy: “people here are generally more focused on building something or achieving something.”

Estonian culture wasn’t hard to adapt to —“Estonians and Australians both like barbecue and beer,” he shrugs.

But the biggest adjustment, he points out, is loneliness: “It’s important to keep in touch with friends and family, but also equally important to build a new life. Eventually, you become someone new, who’s not entirely from the old country and not entirely from the new one.”

From customer support to coding and joining Bolt

Rory had dabbled in programming as a teenager in Australia, but it never really went anywhere.

At Wise, Rory moved from frontline support into a more technical team, tinkering with macros and scripts to automate workflows. That’s when programming really clicked for him — and he taught himself enough to start creating real solutions.

“Estonia has so many tech startups that relocating here definitely opened the door for me to become an engineer,” Rory says.

By 2021, he felt Wise and he had grown apart. Talking to a friend who’d moved to Bolt, he was encouraged to apply. “I liked what I saw from the interviewers and the rest of the team, so I hopped on over.”

Compared to earlier roles, Bolt was faster, more frantic, and more energising. “It’s basically impossible to get bored here; there’s always a new project or direction to go. I'm surprised by just how much and how quickly our engineering teams deliver value.”

Coming from a court background, where everything followed procedure, the contrast was stark. “Considering the Family Court is focused on doing literally everything according to guidelines, yeah,” he grins, “Bolt feels very different.”

In nearly 4 years at Bolt, Rory has worked in 2 teams: Driver-Growth-Conversion, which built global, reusable systems for drivers everywhere, and now Rides-Expansion, where he ensures those systems meet local requirements in new Bolt markets. “It’s cool to see both sides,” he says.

In just his first year on the new team, Rory played a part in 3 notable country launches, with 3 more in the pipeline.

Looking back and ahead

Asked about the most rewarding part of relocating, Rory doesn’t hesitate: “My family, hands down.” His advice for others considering relocation: “Follow your heart, but do it sensibly. Keep options open, never put yourself in a position of dependence, but be open to building a new life.”

After ten years in Estonia, Rory sees his future firmly here. “I mean, I’m gonna be buried here, for sure. My kid’s Estonian! And I’ll happily continue at Bolt unless the culture transforms into something that doesn’t vibe with me anymore — for now, though, I’m a happy badger.”
