Since 2024, Bolt has partnered with Milkywire to support climate projects worldwide. In addition to traditional carbon offsetting (read more about Bolt’s sustainability initiatives), Bolt supports initiatives through voluntary climate action that deliver lasting, measurable climate impact, thereby contributing to global net-zero goals.

In its 2025 Progress Report, Milkywire provides an update on the progress of projects in the portfolio to date, as well as new projects chosen to receive funding. Read on to find out more.

How the climate projects are chosen

The projects Bolt supports are part of Milkywire’s Climate Transformation Fund — a portfolio focused on solutions that deliver long-term carbon reduction or removal, not short-term fixes.

Each initiative aligns with one of three core pillars:

Durable carbon removal
Nature protection and restoration
Decarbonisation

Before receiving funding, projects go through a rigorous selection process to demonstrate their ability to create a meaningful environmental impact, with a strong focus on durability, scalability, and long-term effectiveness.

Pillar one: Durable carbon removal

Durable carbon removal will play a critical role in achieving global climate goals. Supporting innovators in this space helps accelerate solutions that can permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere.

Norma

Norma is building a next-generation direct air capture system that uses less energy by capturing and reusing heat during the carbon removal process. Made from non-toxic, widely available materials, the system is designed to scale and bring carbon removal to market faster.

BlueShift Carbon

BlueShift Carbon removes CO₂ directly from seawater using a low-energy electrochemical process. The treated water is returned to the ocean with reduced acidity, helping support marine health.

Designed to scale, the technology can be integrated with water treatment plants and industrial facilities to maximise both environmental and economic benefits.

Pillar two: Nature protection and restoration

Protecting and restoring nature are among the most effective ways to tackle climate change.

Projects in this pillar focus on restoring degraded landscapes, securing land rights, and supporting sustainable practices that deliver lasting benefits for both people and biodiversity.

Kawsay Nampi

The Kawsay Ñampi project is led by the Kichwa People of Sarayaku in the Ecuadorian Amazon. It protects 142,500 hectares of intact rainforest through Indigenous leadership, supported by modern monitoring tools and technologies.

By preventing deforestation, the project helps protect biodiversity while strengthening Indigenous culture and long-term care of the land.

Pillar three: Decarbonisation

This pillar supports initiatives that remove the regulatory, technical, and social barriers that slow progress, helping accelerate decarbonisation at the pace the climate demands.

Crop Intellect

Crop Intellect has developed R-Leaf, a spray applied to crop leaves that helps break down nitrous oxide — one of the hardest greenhouse gases to reduce — directly in the field.

The project will test R-Leaf at scale across 5,000 hectares of cereal crops, with results independently monitored by researchers. The goal is to generate reliable data on the effectiveness of this approach in reducing nitrous oxide emissions from agriculture.

Working towards net-zero shared mobility

Supporting global climate action is a responsibility Bolt takes seriously. Alongside funding high-impact climate projects, Bolt is working toward carbon net-zero shared mobility by 2040.

Shared mobility plays a key role in building more sustainable cities by:

Making it easier to get around without owning a car.
Reducing the number of private vehicles on crowded streets.
Reclaiming urban space currently used for parking.

Every ride helps move cities in the right direction — towards places designed for people, not cars.
