At Bolt, we believe cities should be built for people, not cars. That principle has guided us as we’ve grown into Europe’s largest micromobility operator, and it is now shaping our most customer-centred vehicle to date: our first shared e-bike, designed entirely in-house to feel accessible, comfortable, and intuitive from the very first ride.

From day one, we designed this e-bike around two perspectives: the people who ride it, and the cities that host it. Alongside rider research across markets, we collaborated with the local activists and officials to smoothly integrate micromobility into existing traffic.

The result is an e-bike built for everyone.

An e-bike for the many, not just the confident few

Shared micromobility only works when more people feel like it’s made for them. Yet most shared e-bikes on the market today are too big, too heavy, and too intimidating.

Our latest research confirmed it: many people avoid shared e-bikes simply because they’re difficult to control, especially for first-time users and riders under 170 cm.

So we built an e-bike for everyone who has felt overlooked by the micromobility market. For the riders who tried once, felt uncomfortable in traffic, and never came back. For the tourists navigating an unfamiliar city. For commuters who want a reliable, comfortable alternative to private cars.

Every design choice we made is supposed to make riding safer, easier, and more welcoming. What that looks like in real life:

A low step-in frame makes getting on and off feel natural.
Compact, lightweight handling with a total weight of 34 kg, plus a frame that’s more than 20 cm shorter than many standard shared e-bikes.
An adjustable saddle supports a broader range of riders comfortably.
Ergonomic handlebars are designed for a more upright posture, reducing strain on wrists and shoulders.

A higher safety standard

Riders want to feel visible, confident, and protected. Cities want shared vehicles that integrate smoothly into traffic and public space. Our in-house e-bike is designed for both.

Feedback from cities like Berlin and Milan highlighted common pain points, from limited visibility to comfort on uneven or cobbled streets. Those insights helped shape the e-bike’s lighting, handling, and stability.

Bolt is the first major operator to integrate such a comprehensive set of safety-first features into a shared e-bike.

More visible, more predictable

Integrated front and rear turn signals, along with a dedicated brake light, help riders clearly signal intent in traffic, especially in low light and on mixed-traffic streets.

More controlled stopping

A triple braking setup (roller brakes on both wheels plus a regenerative brake) gives riders smoother control, stronger stopping power, and less hand strain, particularly in wet weather and on uneven streets.

More stable on real streets

The widest-in-class pneumatic tyres help absorb shocks and improve traction on uneven surfaces such as cobbles, tram rails, and potholes.

Safety beyond the ride

Our e-bike also fits into Bolt’s broader SafeRide approach, including in-app education, geofencing for slow-speed and no-parking zones, and systems that help us address repeat reckless riding.

In 2024 alone, more than 5.8 million pre-ride cognitive reaction tests helped prevent impaired riding, ensuring more than 95% of rides ended safely, incident-free.

Designed for everyday city life

Our data indicates that 22% of Bolt users use e-bikes for errands, and 34% prefer e-bikes over e-scooters when carrying heavier items.

That’s why the new e-bike comes with a spacious, 19L frame-mounted basket with straps to hold your things in place, designed to carry what you need without making the bike feel awkward to steer. There’s also a handlebar-mounted phone holder to make navigation safer and more convenient.

The e-bike is built for real-world city riding:

A solar panel to extend the riding range and reduce the frequency of manual charging.
Automated maintenance triggers keep vehicles in top condition and reduce downtime.
A battery protected from water and dust stays reliable in all weather conditions.
A dockable, swappable battery system keeps vehicles in circulation longer and reduces operational emissions.
A full-colour display keeps users informed with real-time ride updates, without distraction, even in bright sunlight or low-light conditions.

E-bikes also serve longer trips on average, around 2.9 to 3 kilometres, compared to 1.8 km for scooters. That makes e-bikes an essential lever for cities looking to expand micromobility beyond short hops.

Built to perform. Built to support city operations

Micromobility should make cities easier to live in, not harder to manage. That’s why we also designed this e-bike to support smoother operations and tidier streets, shaped by ongoing input from cities on what responsible fleets need to deliver at scale.

Key city-supportive features include:

Dock compatibility for organised parking and smarter charging in high-density zones.
Solar panel integration to help extend battery life and keep the bike connected even when the main battery is removed, improving uptime and resilience against vandalism.
A double lock system to deter theft and vandalism.

Bolt also handles micromobility operations in-house, including deployment, regular maintenance, and customer support. With experience partnering with 200+ cities, we know that scaling micromobility responsibly is as important as doing it quickly.

Part of a multimodal city network

E-bikes fill a distinct role in a multimodal system. They’re well-suited for longer trips, carrying items, and riders who want a seated option that still takes up minimal space. Together with scooters, ride-hailing, and car-sharing, they help customers choose the most efficient mode for each journey, and help cities reduce dependence on private cars.

Bolt’s micromobility fleet has now surpassed 400 million cumulative rides. We see that growth as proof of demand, and a responsibility to keep raising standards.
