The advantages of using ride-hailing as a mode of transportation

The explosive growth of ride-hailing apps has fundamentally changed how we move. The past decade has seen the emergence of ride-hailing services and pushed them firmly into the spotlight.

Urban populations are rocketing, and ride-hailing is becoming a primary mode of transport, with the potential to eliminate the need for personal vehicle ownership. An Accenture study has shown that nearly two-thirds of US car owners who ride-hail would consider selling their personal vehicles within the next decade.

In this article, we’ll explain the benefits of ride-hailing, how ride-hailing apps work, and how the ride-hailing industry compares to ride-sharing and public transport.

What is ride-hailing?

Ride-hailing refers to the act in which a customer uses a ride-hailing app to hire a personal driver to take them wherever they need to go.

The vehicle’s exclusive to the customer and isn’t shared with other riders, nor does it make multiple stops (unless requested). It allows customers to go from A to B without any detours.

How does it differ from ride-sharing?

Ride-sharing allows 2 or more passengers to get where they’re going by sharing a vehicle heading in a similar direction. The driver makes a sequence of pre-scheduled stops for passenger pick-ups and drop-offs.
This transport mode isn’t to be confused with car-sharing, which allows a single car to be used by multiple drivers.

How ride-hailing works

Ride-hailing companies offer a digital platform that seamlessly connects passengers with drivers, shows receipts, ride history, and driver insights at the tap of a button, and ensures a quality service. Ride-hailing services typically operate through mobile apps.

Riders download a ride-hailing app, create an account, and provide payment information. When they need a ride, they simply open the app, enter their desired destination (and pick-up location), and request a ride.

Drivers can sign up to earn with a ride-hailing company. After meeting the requirements and passing an onboarding course, a driver can start receiving ride requests on the driver app.

Drivers without a car can also benefit from the ride-hailing industry. Depending on local legislation, they may be able to join a fleet or use a rental car.

Ride-hailing is a fast, convenient, and safe way to commute and a flexible way to make extra income.

How ride-hailing apps work

When a user opens a ride-hailing app on their smart device and enters their destination, the app displays available ride categories and calculates the fare. The Bolt app always shows the total price of the trip before a rider accepts.

Once the rider selects the ride category and accepts the fare, the app sends the ride request to available drivers nearby whose vehicle meets the selected criteria (vehicle type, additional features, etc.). These drivers receive the request and the passenger’s pick-up location and destination.

Drivers can accept or decline requests based on availability and proximity to the passenger. The app generally provides drivers with essential details such as the destination, the fare, and the rider’s rating — allowing them to make an informed decision.

Once a driver accepts a request, the rider can track the driver’s location and estimated arrival time. The rider can also see the vehicle registration plate and model, so they can easily recognise it upon arrival. And the rider and driver can contact each other via the app should the need arise.

The ride-hailing app alerts the rider when the driver is approaching the pick-up location and again when they arrive. Once the ride begins, the app displays the route and estimated arrival time.

The app automatically charges the fare after the ride if the rider has chosen a cashless payment option. Both riders and drivers have access to multiple safety features and the option to rate the trip and leave feedback, ensuring accountability and improving the service quality.

Behind the scenes, ride-hailing apps use mobile technology and GPS tracking for a seamless experience. The system manages a vast network of servers, databases, and algorithms to process and optimise ride requests. These algorithms consider factors such as traffic conditions, driver availability, and passenger preferences to match riders with drivers efficiently.

The advantages of ride-hailing

When you next need to travel, here are some reasons why you should consider ride-hailing over ride-sharing and public transport:

Get more things done

Is there anything more stress-inducing than taking a call on a busy bus or sitting next to a curious toddler while trying to get a head start on your day?

Whether you’re on the way to a family get-together or returning to the office after a longer-than-expected business lunch, it’s important to maximise every minute of the day.

When you use a ride-hailing app to move around the city, the possibilities for increased productivity are endless! From the backseat, you can sort through emails, make calls, or even take the opportunity to catch up on some beauty sleep — we’re not judging!

An easy-to-use mode of transport

When it comes to convenience, there’s no comparison between ride-hailing and public transport; ride-hailing wins every time.

Instead of chasing a passing-by taxi or plotting the ins and outs of the local bus network, ride-hailing app users can get a ride at their location in minutes. That means no more waiting half an hour for the next train or bus. You don’t even need to pinpoint a pick-up spot — the drivers know exactly where you are, even if you don’t!

The convenience doesn’t stop with the pick-up. Once you reach your destination, you don’t need to hand over cash, as your account’s linked with your payment information. This means you can be on your way without any hiccups or confusion.

For business journeys, Bolt Business also takes the hassle out of expensing work rides.

Moving around in comfort

Ride-hailing apps provide a safe and secure alternative to public transport. If you’re in the mood for more comfort and privacy, you’ll get your own backseat space.

Additionally, we conduct background checks on all prospective drivers and vehicles and have a wide selection of in-app safety features, meaning you never have to be in any doubt about your safety.
