Transporting a small child without a car seat

FAQ Drive

Yes. Under the Public Transport Act, drivers offering rides on the Bolt platform are classified as taxi service providers. Therefore, the same child safety exemptions that apply to standard taxis also apply to Bolt rides (Traffic Act § 36(9)).

No. A valid taxi license is sufficient. The legal exemption depends on the vehicle's official operating status, not its visual appearance.

  • Children Under 3 (incl. infants): May travel without a child restraint in the back seat only, sitting on an adult's lap. The adult must wear a seatbelt and hold only one child.

  • Children Aged 3+ (under 36 kg): Must use a booster seat or suitable child restraint in the back seat. If multiple children are traveling, at least one must be secured with a restraint, while the others must use at least the lap portion of the seatbelt.

  • Children in the Front Seat: Permitted only if properly secured with an appropriate seatbelt or child restraint. Never place a rear-facing child seat in front of an active airbag.

  • Child on a Lap in Front: Strictly prohibited under all circumstances.

No. As an independent service provider, you retain the right to accept or decline any ride in accordance with Bolt's Terms of Service. However, if the legal conditions are met (child under 3, back seat, adult wearing a seatbelt), the ride is fully legal. If you choose to decline, base your decision on a personal safety preference rather than a legal prohibition.

You must decline the ride if any safety requirements are breached or cannot be verified. Refuse the ride if:

  • A child sits on an adult's lap in the front seat.
  • The accompanying adult holding a child refuses to wear a seatbelt.
  • A child aged 3 or older is not properly secured with a seatbelt or a suitable booster/restraint.
  • A passenger-provided child seat appears damaged, fails safety standards, or cannot be secured properly.

Ensure the seat meets current safety standards (ECE R44/04 or ECE R129 / i-Size), fits the child, and is installed securely. If you cannot confirm this within a reasonable timeframe, you may decline the ride.

  • Driver: Responsible for ensuring that overall vehicle safety and legal compliance requirements are met before starting the trip.
  • Accompanying Adult: Responsible for supervising and holding the child correctly, as well as wearing their own seatbelt at all times.
