Making micromobility accessible with Bolt for All

Mar 14, 2024

With the Bolt for All initiative, eligible users get 50% off Bolt scooters and e-bike rides.* To get the discount, users must fill out a form on Bolt’s website and provide supporting documents.

This blog post will discuss why we’ve launched the initiative and how it can help cities and their residents.

*Eligible groups might differ from country to country.

Why are we doing this?

Promoting social inclusion

Research shows that transport costs can be a challenge for lower-income people and may affect their ability to access employment opportunities and key services.

With the Bolt for All initiative, we aim to address this issue and facilitate mobility for the most socio-economically vulnerable people in the region.

At Bolt, we believe shared mobility should be accessible to all. We aim to help create a more inclusive environment where everyone can move around easily and at an affordable cost,” said Balthasar Scheder, Regional Manager at Bolt.

Contributing to cities’ emission-reduction goals by nudging people to more sustainable transport

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), over 30% of car journeys in Europe cover distances of under 3 km, and 50% cover less than 5 km!

Such short trips could be made by shared scooters and e-bikes instead. In fact, our data shows that scooters are typically used for trips up to 4 km and e-bikes up to 5.5 km.

Thus, micromobility can contribute to achieving cities’ emission-reduction goals. Creating appropriate conditions is, however, crucial for people to discover micromobility’s simplicity and convenience.

Our 2022 experiment with the Institute of Transport Economics across 10 European cities showed that, if encouraged, 40–60% of Bolt app users would choose micromobility over ride-hailing, especially for shorter distances.

Moreover, when examining micromobility usage in Berlin’s suburbs, Wildau University of Applied Sciences (TH Wildau) found that 51–67% of riders used scooters and e-bikes as a feeder to public transport. And 60–70% of riders used micromobility vehicles as an alternative to private cars.

How to get the discount

The Bolt for All programme is currently available in Düsseldorf, Germany and Brussels, Belgium

To get the 50% discount on the per-minute rate, eligible city residents must complete the form on the Bolt website and provide the required supporting documents.

After submitting the form, the applicant will receive confirmation of their eligibility. The discount will automatically be applied to their next Bolt scooter or e-bike rides.

Making cities for people, not cars

Bolt for All is merely 1 of our initiatives aimed at facilitating mobility for all and providing sustainable, convenient, and affordable transport solutions.

As the largest micromobility operator in Europe, we’re keen to share our experiences and advise local governments on integrating shared vehicles into existing transport systems.
