The most familiar part of the Bolt internship story usually starts the same way. A notification. A pause. Then, rereading the email. And again.

Seemab stared at her screen, hunting for one word. “I kept thinking, where is the word ‘unfortunately’? Why doesn’t it start with unfortunately?” Olga was convinced she failed the interview, so the subject line felt suspicious. “My first thought was that it must have been a scam.” Ron describes every email during internship season as “a mini heart attack.” “Then the offer arrived, and “Congratulations by Post Malone started playing in my head.”

Different places, exact moment. The internship was real. In reality, that moment meant they had made it into the top 1% of applicants.

And for many, it became the start of something longer.

This blog post follows the journey of 5 former interns who now work full-time at Bolt. Read their stories to learn about the process, their experience at Bolt, and their advice for future applicants.

Who they were then, who they are now

By the time you meet them today, the “intern” label is long gone. What stays is the way they talk about their work. Practical, specific, and connected to outcomes.

Seemab is now a Junior Competitive Intelligence Analyst for Rides Finance. She maintains dashboards for 50+ countries, analyses competitor activity across key metrics, and identifies ways to automate processes. She calls herself “a restless person, always looking for something to do”, whether it’s work or life. Outside Bolt, she’s deep into house cleaning and organising videos, then recreating the same calm in her own apartment. Comedy gigs and karaoke nights are non-negotiable.

Norman is a Junior Field Application Engineer in Bolt’s hardware team, the group that develops and manages Bolt e-scooters and e-bikes. “Our team makes sure that all of Bolt’s micromobility vehicles work,” he says. Off the clock, he’s in motion. Skateboard, snowboard, surf, anything that qualifies as an extreme sport. He also tinkers with a car project and plays guitar.

Ron is a Junior Data Analytics Engineer on the Finance Data Warehouse team, building and maintaining pipelines to ensure financial reporting is accurate, enabling decision-making based on reality. His favourite part is simple. “I don’t feel lost in the corporate jungle; instead, I see myself contributing towards a product I use daily myself.”

Jurgen is a Junior FP&A Analyst for the Workplace department and the Internal IT department. He creates budgets, analyses costs, and supports teams with everything finance. Outside work, most energy goes to finishing his final thesis, the gym, and friends and family.

Olga is a Junior Data Scientist working on improving the quality of Customer Support. Her day-to-day is data analysis, transformation, automation, and forecasting. “Besides occasional ‘fortune-telling’ with models,” she says, she spends her free time debating, playing piano, and doing yoga.

What got them across the line

If you ask former interns why they got in, no one points to a single magic credential. The answers are about choices. How they prepared, how they showed up, what they made easy for interviewers to believe.

Seemab’s practical move was straightforward. “I made sure that my resume is tailored to the exact job description.” Not generic edits, but aligning past experiences to what the role actually asked for. Later, her mentor told her what stood out most. It wasn’t only skills. It was a mindset. “My willingness to learn.”

Norman treated Bolt’s homework task like a signal. “When Bolt answered me and sent me a small homework task, I felt that I had to go all in.” He practised interviews with family, researched potential questions, and “even used AI to practice.”
He also made his micromobility experience visible, from fixing scooters and boards to designing a functional bike in CAD software. He researched Bolt’s values, then went deep on the product. “I read through pretty much all the Bolt Blog posts related to micromobility.”

Ron didn’t have previous work experience, so he built proof where he could. “I was eager to scrape up as many personal and school projects as I had done on the side,” and he doubled down on how he carried himself — initiative, ambition, confidence. One specific thing helped him cut through. He showcased a project from another internship’s homework that happened to be relevant to his future team’s niche.

Jurgen points to foundations and structure. He believes that having strong core knowledge and technical skills matters because it lets the internship focus on practical experience rather than relearning basics. His application strategy was thorough preparation: anticipate likely questions, prepare structured answers using the STAR method, research the role and team, and carefully read the job description.

Olga’s approach is the one many candidates hesitate to try, even though interviewers consistently reward it. Honesty. She asked her manager and mentor what stood out. “I openly admitted when I didn’t know something instead of trying to invent an answer.” She balanced it by thinking out loud, walking through her reasoning, making assumptions, and sharing ideas. She also committed serious time to the process. “One of the few applicants who were ready to commit 8 hours of their time to solving a challenging hometask.”

First days at Bolt

Day one is rarely about the work itself. It’s about uncertainty. What do people wear? How do meetings work? When can you ask questions? Where do you even sit?

Jurgen remembers a detail that sounds small until you’ve lived it. Dress code ambiguity can create pointless stress, especially if you’ve seen strict expectations elsewhere. Bolt removed that uncertainty early. “The best part? They simply told us to wear what we like.”

Seemab expected she would be doing routine tasks, such as collecting data and cleaning files. Instead, “they started me on real work from day one. Whatever they were doing, I was doing that.”

Norman came in assuming he’d spend time supporting others with simple hands-on tasks. The reality was sharper. “I was given important tasks that had a real global impact.” He describes feeling part of the team because he was trusted early on.

Ron also expected small, low-stakes tasks at first. What surprised him was the level of trust paired with support. He was given ownership, but not left alone with it.

Olga describes the same combination, with an extra layer that matters when you’re learning fast. The team supported her with senior guidance and emotional backing when she struggled. The people around her were not only competent, but “kind and thoughtful.”

Ten weeks of “Get it done”

Bolt’s internship is built as real work. You don’t spend ten weeks shadowing or polishing side tasks. You join a team and take ownership of work that has to hold up in the real world.

Norman’s summer was defined by one core project from day one. He conducted pilot testing of e-bikes in Tallinn, identifying weak points, failing components, and overall fleet vehicle quality issues. The numbers made it real. He was responsible for a fleet of 24 vehicles, and 876 orders were started using those bikes. It was intimidating at first. “It felt scary at the beginning,” he says, but over time, that fear turned into competence. Seeing the bikes on the streets and reading positive user feedback made the impact tangible.

Ron’s moment arrived in a stakeholder meeting, before any big launch story could even form. “People weren’t just being nice about an intern project,” he says. They were going to rely on it for real month-end numbers. “This was production work, not practice.”

Olga worked on improving the accuracy of a classification model that identifies the issue a customer has when they contact support. The shift from “interesting project” to “real impact” was marked by one suggestion from her team. Run an A/B test. Deploy her updated model to half of the traffic and compare it against the current one. “In that moment, it was clear that I wasn’t doing something just for the sake of doing, my work really mattered.”

Jurgen’s internship project was a staff cost calculator. The defining step was not finishing the spreadsheet or the logic. It was granting access to executives and managers who would use it for planning. “The moment I shared it with our CEO, Markus, and other senior leaders, and later saw them actually using the tool in their work, it really hit me.”

Seemab’s impact moment was tied to visibility at the top. Seeing leadership comments on the competitor numbers her team produced changed how she viewed her work. “That was the moment when I felt like this is important work on which the CEO is actually relying.”

Expectations vs reality

Most interns arrive with the same assumption. You’ll observe, assist, and gradually earn trust. Bolt has flipped that order. You’re treated like a teammate from the start, and you learn by operating at the company’s pace.

Seemab expected routine support work, but ended up in her team’s core workflow. Norman pictured himself as an extra pair of hands, only to find himself trusted with responsibilities that had a global impact. Ron braced for “small, boring” tasks and instead took on work that fed real financial processes. Olga assumed she’d start on something low-stakes to learn the system, then found herself building work serious enough to ship and validate.

The real difference is not only what you do. It’s how you operate.

Ron calls Bolt a speed train. If you wait for perfect comfort, it passes. If you take initiative, give input, and step out of your comfort zone, you grow fast because the environment is built for action-takers.

Jurgen came in, having heard that finance at Bolt is intense. His experience landed somewhere more useful. Fast growth without chaos. “It struck the perfect level of intensity where you develop and grow at a swift pace, and yet it isn't overwhelming.”

Seemab’s learning curve wasn’t about hard skills, surprising her. It was about mental organisation. Compartmentalising, staying structured, and writing everything down so you can revisit notes. She also learned something that sounds obvious, but matters in high-output teams. You will never “fix everything.” “There will be newer problems every day, and that’s the whole point of the job. So don’t stress yourself out thinking you haven’t fixed everything. You need to learn to sit with the mess.”

Norman’s surprise was what “data-driven” really means in practice. Data analysis isn’t a buzzword; it’s how problems get understood and decisions get made. He now uses vehicle data constantly to diagnose issues and validate changes.

Olga’s most significant unexpected requirement wasn’t a tool. It was patience. Experiments take time. Pipelines fail. Debugging and trying again is part of the work. Learning to stay calm during slow progress became a skill she uses daily.

The click. When staying became the plan

At some point, every intern hits the same quiet question. Would I stay here after summer?

For Jurgen, it happened within the first few days. He noticed how much Bolt invests in people, from workplace setup and high-quality tools to training opportunities and benefits like mental health support. The environment mattered too. Ambitious, intelligent people, many around his age, in a setting that feels motivating and fun. Add a company that keeps evolving, and the answer arrived early.

Ron’s click was tied to the product and the pace. He’d always wanted to build something he genuinely uses. Bolt already fit that. What sealed it was how quickly the work moves and how much responsibility you can take on while learning.

Norman describes it more simply. It clicked once he settled into the environment and got to know the team. “Everyone I met was nice, helpful, and smart. The people at Bolt are incredible.”

Olga came in with a mission. Convert the internship into a full-time offer. What made her want to stay long-term was not only the work, but the people. She’s learned, from experience and from watching others, that the team around you has a significant impact on your wellbeing and growth.

Seemab’s turning point is the most Bolt answer of all. “I think it was when I saw the music and karaoke room.”

If you apply next. Lessons they wish they’d had

Make your application easy to believe
Seemab’s practical advice is specific. Tailor your CV to the job description. Link your experience, even small parts of it, to what the role asks for. It’s one of the fastest ways to earn an interview.

Practice like it’s part of the job
Norman rehearsed interviews with family, researched questions, and used AI to practice. He also learned to talk about strengths clearly, even if it feels uncomfortable. “The interviewers do not know you, so you have to explain what you are capable of.”

Bring proof, even if it’s not paid work
Ron used personal and school projects to show experience, then backed it up with confidence and initiative. “Don’t be afraid to stand out, give input, and be confident.”

Be honest, then show how you think
Olga’s advice is built on what her manager noticed. Admit what you don’t know, then walk through reasoning, assumptions, and ideas. Honesty plus critical thinking is more convincing than pretending.

Avoid these red flags
Seemab is direct. If you can’t show willingness to learn, you can get rejected even with the right skillset.
Ron warns against trying to come off as flawless. If you can’t talk honestly about a gap or mistake, it’s hard to trust that you’ll learn fast.
Olga adds a different kind of red flag, based on what she’s seen elsewhere. Non-fixed offers with unclear timelines. Interns underestimate their value, and clarity matters.

Expect mistakes. Use them
Seemab learned you’ll never finish every problem. Don’t let that become stress.
Norman’s mistake was jumping to conclusions before understanding details.
Ron’s mistake was playing it too safe. He spent too long trying to avoid missteps instead of moving fast and iterating. And once joining a stakeholder meeting unprepared taught him to always show up with a simple agenda, key numbers, and clear questions.
Jurgen learned to prioritise reconciliation early because not all datasets align perfectly.
Olga learned to run experiments cleanly, not testing too many changes at once, and to build a strict routine to avoid reruns.

Soft skills show up everywhere
Seemab leans on compartmentalising and organised note-taking. Jurgen highlights storytelling because FP&A is telling the story behind the numbers, not only producing them. Ron jokes that he spends time “playing detective” across dashboards and edge cases. Olga points to patience as a daily requirement.
