Step 1: Submitting your application

Step 2: Recruiter screening

If your profile appears to be a match, one of our recruiters will contact you for an initial chat. This conversation isn’t about testing your coding skills. Instead, it’s about:

Understanding your background and motivations.
Finding out what you’re looking for in your next role.
Walking through your CV to identify the best interview track (Backend, Data, Commerce, etc.).
Checking language skills, communication style, and overall culture fit.
Answering questions about the role, contract type, relocation, and what to expect next.

Step 3: Optional take-home coding task

Some candidates may be asked to complete a short coding challenge on HackerRank. This step helps us assess:

Proficiency in core coding concepts.

This helps candidates understand the level of technical expertise expected in live rounds and how to prepare for them.

Step 4: Live coding interview

Next is a live coding session with one of our engineers. This stage evaluates:

Problem-solving skills: how you approach challenges.
Coding ability: clean, efficient, and correct solutions.
Computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and sometimes security basics.

The goal isn’t just to get the “right” answer but to understand your thought process.

You may also meet future teammates during this stage, which will give you a sense of the team dynamic.

Step 5: Code review and refactoring interview (for backend candidates)

In this stage, you’ll work with a piece of code — either your own or a sample provided — and walk through improvements. We’re looking at how you approach:

Reviewing code for clarity, maintainability, and correctness.
Refactoring: simplifying, optimising, or restructuring while keeping functionality intact.
Applying specialised knowledge that’s relevant to the role (for example, backend engineers may be asked about database access patterns or API design).

The goal is to understand how you reason about other people’s code, not just your own. This reflects real life at Bolt, where engineers often collaborate on pull requests and large-scale refactorings.

Step 6: System design interview (mainly for backend and platform roles)

This stage focuses on how you approach building systems at scale, from understanding product requirements to designing solutions that are reliable, maintainable, and scalable to growth.

During the interview, you’ll be asked to design a system or API live while explaining your reasoning, trade-offs, and priorities. Depending on your background, the focus might be on backend architecture, full-stack application design, or frontend API design.

You might be asked to:

Design a ride-matching system for millions of drivers and riders.
Build a notification service that supports multiple channels (push, SMS, email).

We’re not testing memorisation. What matters is how you think — how you structure ideas, clarify assumptions, and evolve a design from concept to scale. Interviewers look for clear reasoning, good trade-offs, and awareness of real-world constraints.

How to prepare:

Clarify requirements early. Ask questions about scope, users, and constraints before diving in.
Think out loud. Explain your reasoning and highlight trade-offs or alternatives.
Focus on fundamentals. Scalability, fault tolerance, data consistency, caching, APIs, and monitoring.
Show ownership. Discuss not only how you’d build something, but how you’d operate it (logging, alerting, maintenance).

The team fit interview helps us understand how you collaborate, make decisions, and contribute within a team. It’s about both company fit and team fit — how your mindset, communication style, and problem-solving approach align with how we work at Bolt.

You’ll discuss real examples from your experience: handling ambiguity, balancing trade-offs, resolving conflicts, or aligning with broader company goals. Interviewers want to see how you think, communicate, and take ownership — not just what you’ve achieved, but how you achieved it.

How to prepare:

Reflect on a few strong examples that show teamwork, collaboration, and decision-making. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers.

System design

Question: What is your involvement in the idea generation/ideation process for your future work?
Tip: Show ownership and initiative — how you spot problems, suggest data-backed ideas, and turn them into impact. Mention collaboration with PMs/designers and a clear result (e.g. faster builds, better UX).
Question: Did you have experience collaborating with other teams to build or achieve something? What was the best collaboration you had — and what made it great? What about the most challenging one?
Tip: Highlight teamwork, communication, and shared goals. Explain what made good collaboration work and what you learned from tough ones. Use STAR structure and stay solution-focused.

Backend-specific

Question: What happens under the hood when a client sends a request to a REST API?
Tip: Walk through the lifecycle: HTTP, routing, middleware, DB access, error handling, and response shaping.

Question: How would you diagnose and optimise a slow SQL query in production?
Tip: Cover monitoring, query plans, indexing, restructuring, caching, and fallback strategies.
