Each Bolt category has different requirements based on your car type, model year, number of seats, and city. Make sure your car meets all the requirements for the category you want to drive in. A good CarScan score alone is not enough — your car must also meet the type, year, and city requirements.

Economy Available in all cities except Cape Town.
Vehicle Type
- Johannesburg, Durban, Pietermaritzburg: 5-door hatchbacks only
- Other cities: All 5-door vehicles allowed (hatchbacks, sedans, crossovers, station wagons, vans)
Model Year
- Johannesburg, Durban: 2010+
- East London, Pietermaritzburg, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Rustenburg: 2010+
- Other cities: 2000+
- Note: In cities with a 2010+ requirement, vehicles from 2010–2013 qualify for Economy only
- CarScan score: 70+
Important: Cape Town Update Economy is no longer available. Bolt is now the base category. Vehicles will be assessed for Bolt eligibility.
Bolt (Standard) Available in all cities (base category in Cape Town)
Vehicle Type
- Cape Town: All 5-door vehicles allowed
- Other cities: Sedans, crossovers, station wagons, vans (no hatchbacks)
Model Year
- All cities: 2014+
- Note: Hatchbacks are only allowed in Cape Town
- CarScan score: 70+
Comfort Available in: Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Pietermaritzburg

- All cities: 5-door sedans, crossovers, station wagons, and vans
- Cape Town: Mid-size and larger hatchbacks also allowed
Model Year
- All cities: 2022+
- Exceptions: 2014-2021 Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Volvo, Jaguar, and Land Rover Brands with 90+ Car Scan Score
- CarScan score : Standard: 70+
Important: Hatchbacks are only allowed in Cape Town (mid-size and larger only) Compact hatchbacks are not eligible
Bolt Premium Available in: Johannesburg and Cape Town only Vehicle Type:
- 5-door luxury sedans and SUVs — no hatchbacks — brand must be BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, or Lexus
- Model Year 2015 or newer 70 or higher (2015 and newer) | 90 or higher (2013–2014 models only)

CarScan score: 70+
Important: Vehicles with 6–7 seats qualify for Bolt XL only XXL is not available outside Johannesburg and Cape Town

More about the Bolt Category
- To check if you are enrolled into the Bolt category, press on the vehicle icon on the right hand side of your Bolt app.
- If the Bolt category shows, you can select it. This will allow you to receive rides from this category.
